HOT TREND: Terrariums

Terrariums are just about everywhere you look these days - Urban Outfitters, Etsy, World Market, Home Goods, Home Depot, to name a few. I first reported on them back in 2012 here. Making terrariums is an old craft dating back to the Victorians. It's about bringing the outdoors indoors, contained in glass enclosures. I keep seeing all the fixings for making my own terrarium and I think I'm going to get busy this weekend and make one. I just LOVE the look!

Year of the Horse

May good fortune, happiness, wealth and longevity reign in this New Year! From January 31, 2014 through February 18, 2015, the Chinese zodiac calendar celebrates the Year of the Horse. Expect to see horse-inspired motifs and a color palette consisting of gold, red, green jade (the symbol of luck), grey, black and of course, horsehair shades of browns and neutrals.

The lace tab says "great success with the arrival of the horse" in Chinese, while the tongue features the Year of the Horse logo.

A collection of small leather goods including wallet, clutches, lanyards and more, the overall color palette centers on a bright red hue with black and white stripes, and gold accents for added grandeur. As usual, Givenchy’s trademark five-point star appears throughout, in addition to a shark tooth zipper pull found on one of its wallet offerings – a gesture that represents good fortune.

Reclaimed Wood Pallets

I keep seeing recycled wood pallets made into functional pieces of furniture on sites like Apartment Therapy, Etsy, and Pinterest. These pallets are easy to come by and can be left rough and rustic or sanded smooth. They work from a design perspective whether they are in a farm house or an urban loft. The trend in refurbishing is more appealing than ever as a way to reuse, restore, and reclaim materials and objects and give them a second life.

Get rid of the crumbs to make room for the cake!

Wishing you a happy New Year!
I've been enjoying some much-needed time with my family over the Christmas break, and that included stepping away from my computer. I thoroughly enjoyed taking mid-morning walks with my husband and dogs, watching movies with our boys, and cooking meals using my favorite recipes. Today is my first day back at work and I'm actually excited to get back on track to make 2014 a fabulous year. Do you make yearly resolutions? I don't because I know I won't keep them. Then I watched the TODAY show on the morning of New Year's eve and heard Clive Arthur and Stefanie Ziev talk about how to make 2014 a truly happy new year. I was inspired enough by their words to jot down these morsels of goodness that I actually think I could embrace:

Ask yourself, if this were going to be the last year of your life, what would you want to accomplish?

Step out of your comfort zone; life begins where your comfort zone ends.

When it's scary (stepping out of your comfort zone), that's when life is great!

Let go something old to make room for something new.

Be willing to get rid of the crumbs to make room for the cake, and acknowledge that you are worthy of the cake.

Acknowledge failure, and don't strive for perfection.
